IGNOU FRESH ADMISSION  Must Understand IGNOU Admission Session.

IGNOU Admission  for January 2024 Session has started Online. The last date to apply online is further extended till 20 March 2024. Admission window for this cycle  activated from 15th December 2023 onwards for all the programme of both ODL mode programmes and OL mode programmes. IGNOU offers admission in few courses (B.Ed, BSCN etc) via entrance test.

IGNOU, The Mega University of World in Distance Education, has formally commenced the admission for January 2024 cycle from Samarth portal. Student can apply online and pay the fee. Several master, bachelor, Diploma and certificates are being offered in January 2024 session. The list can be checked while applying online.

IGNOU Offers admission in two mode, first is ODL (Open Distance Learning ) Mode and Online (OL) Mode. Click here to understand difference between ODL mode and OL mode.

IGNOU Samarth portal is opened for the aspirants to apply for new admission. Any further extension in IGNOU admission last date will be notified via official notification. Last date is extended in different phase with or without Late FEE. IGNOU admission start and last date and extension period is as below for Previous sessions

IGNOU Admission start and last date July 2023 session 15 May 2023 to 20 October 2023.
IGNOU Admission start and last date January 2023 session 28 Deecmber 2022 to Extended till 31 March 2023
IGNOU Fresh Admission start and last date July 2022 session 30 May 2022 to Extended till 15 November 2022
IGNOU Fresh Admission start and last date January 2022 session 24  December 2021 to Extended till 31 March 2022

IGNOU Admission Confirmation process and activity sequence is given below in brief.

  1. When your IGNOU admission form is processed and admission is confirmed then IGNOU Student ID Card is generated online. This ID Card contains 10 digit enrollment number and you can download ID Card Online easily in few steps.
  2. Since IGNOU offers distance learning, hence book or study material is sent only for student who has taken admission in ODL (Open Distance Learning) mode. If any ODL student has not received books by post then they can download study material and use till the receiving of hard copy study material. Student who has taken admission in online (OL) Mode will not be provided hard copy book and they need to study with soft copy material on LMS (Learning Management System) portal.
  3. IGNOU induction and counselling class is scheduled by the Study Center / Regional Center after all the admission form is processed. Student need to attend the class offline / online as decided by Regional Center / Study center. Class schedule is intimated by email / website.
  4. IGNOU student need to write assignment for each subject and submit assignment at study center before the last date. Keep in mind that each course code has one assignment question paper. IGNOU assignment question paper can be downloaded online. Submission of assignment is mandatory to apply for examination. IGNOU Assignment submission status can be checked online here.
  5. IGNOU exam datesheet is published online well in advance and student can plan their exam preparation. Student need to submit IGNOU exam form online and pay the examination before the last date. Exam Hall ticket / Admit card is  generated before the 10 - 15 days of examination commencement and student need to download it from the website.
  6. Many IGNOU Programme has practical component and student need to attend minimum 70% practical class to be eligible in the term end practical exam (TEPE). Practical exam datesheet is published online by Regional Center / Study center.
  7. After the examination IGNOU result is published on website. The IGNOU Grade card status shows the term end exam result and assignment marks collectively online and shows the course completion status too.
  8. Student of PG And UG Programme need apply for re-registration (RR) which is also called admission to next year / Semester. IGNOU RR form is accepted in two session every year i.e January and July. After successfully completion of entire programme student can apply for IGNOU Convocation online.
  9. IGNOU extends Student Support Services (SSS) to its learners via various channels. Any Old or new student can use these support services through online or Regional Center or study center.

Revised Refund rule for IGNOU Admission Cancellation or excess payment.

In a notification issued dated 16.02.2023, IGNOU has revised refund rule for Admission Cancellation Fee or excess payment or double payment due to failure of online transaction for admission in IGNOU. Few highlighted points for refund rule is given below. This refund rule will be implemented with effect from January 2023 admission cycle.

Before Admission Confirmation if any student wants to cancel the IGNOU admission then Full Programme fee will be refunded except nominal registration fee.

After the Admission Confirmation

  • Within 15 days after confirmation of admission Rs 500/- and registration will be deducted.
  • Within 90 days after confirmation of admission Rs 1000/- and registration fee will be deducted.
  • Beyond 90 days after confirmation of admission No refund shall be made.

Admission Fee to be paid in online Mode. There is a minor increment in admission fee from July 2023 session onwards and the amount to be paid will be displayed during filling of online application form. Fee hike will differ programme to programme which will be mentioned in the Common prospectus for July 2023 admission session.

Also there is a provision of FEE Exemption for SC/ST Candidates.

IGNOU grade card tells about the completion status of your programme and is generated online after your submission of assignment or writing theory or practical examination.

Once you apply for IGNOU admission, you will be given a temporary control number as a reference. It may take few weeks to confirm your admission. However after the generation of your enrollment number you can check your admission status and detail on the website. Once course is completed successfully by the student, they become eligible for IGNOU convocation certificate.

What is Discrepancy in IGNOU Application form ?

At the outset, IGNOU offers its courses in Two Modes and Two Session i.e. January and July every year

1. ODL (Open Distance Learning ) Mode : A brief description

This is distance learning mode where book/study material comes to student door step after admission confirmation. Student is allotted a Learner support center (LSC) is also called Study Center (SC) for all its academic support.

2.  ONLINE Mode : A brief Description

In recent Past year IGNOU started offering its few programme in ONLINE mode using E-material /Tutorial like videos, Text (pdf) and live interactive session, forum etc from COE (Centre for Online Education). Exam is conducted in online mode and is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). Type of exam can be MCQ or descriptive which is course specific.


Admission for January Session begin from : November / December of Past year and continues till February or upto march also as decided by University time to time.

 Admission for July Session begin from : April / May  continues till Aug or upto September also, as decided by University time to time.


Avoid Any Confusion Between:  IGNOU (ODL) learner & IGNOU (ONLINE) learner.

Please note that IGNOU OFFERS admission in two modes. The basic and one look difference is IGNOU Online Programme (IOP) ends with suffix "OL" in the programme Code. Example of Online (OL) mode programme is MBAOL, MCAOL, BCOMOL, BLISOL, CFNOL, MEGOL, MHDOL etc,

While IGNOU ODL Mode progamme will not have any suffix. Example of ODL prgrammes are  MEG, MBA, MCA, BLIS, MHD, MPS, CFN etc.

ODL MODE : Open Distance Learning Mode  

In this mode students takes admission ONLINE using IGNOU Samarth Portal, where student can select Regional Centre and Study Centre for classes and academic support.

In this mode student can attend counselling class, submit Assignment and attend practical class etc. at their study centre.

Student need to apply for Term End Exam and the exam is conducted across the country where student has liberty to choose the exam centre in any state across the country.

Exam is conducted OFFLINE at exam centres using pen and paper.

Overall, such student has two immediate point of contact that is Regional Centre and Study Center.

ONLINE MODE :    

This is recent development in IGNOU. In recent Past year IGNOU started offering its few programme (as of now 32 Programmes ) in ONLINE mode using E-material /Tutorial like videos, Text (pdf) and live interactive session, forum etc from COE (Centre for Online Education, IGNOU , HQ New Delhi).

In this mode students takes admission ONLINE using IGNOU Samarth Portal, where student has no option of Regional Center and Study Center for classes and academic support. In the online admission details student will find Regional Center as CO and study Center as COE.

All academic support is extended by COE, IGNOU, New Delhi in digital mode using LMS (Learning Management System) for registered students only. No hard copy study material is provided to such students. Student need to study online, where Student need to login on LMS(Learning Management System ) with the USER NAME and PASSWORD.

Exam is conducted in online mode and is conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). Type of exam can be MCQ or descriptive which is course specific. IGNOU has started conducing ONLINE exam on its own from TEE June 2021 using ORPE (Online Remote Proctored Examination). In Remote proctoring students are monitored online and live while writing a test remotely and faraway place. In this system proctors are able to disable a test immediately if any student found doing any suspicious activity.
